Five Days of Foundation: 7 Foundation Hacks

The base of your makeup can make the difference between a good makeup day and a I-want-to-take-this-crap-off-asap makeup day. Here are 7 tips to change up your foundation game.

1. Reduce the look of pores, texture, fine lines and wrinkles.

Have pores, texture, or fine lines and wrinkles? Try a pore filling primer. My favorite is the Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer. It retails for $39 at Ulta, but a little goes a long way. Primers that have a silicon base (which include some form of Methicone, trimethicone, and/or Dimethicone as a main ingredient) work to fill in pores, lines, and the area around texture, but can sometimes cause foundation to slip and slide when applied too liberally. The key to making these primers work their best is to use a small amount and only apply to the areas you want to smooth out.

2. Acne.

Need to cover up a blemish or two? After your skin care and primer, but before your foundation, blend a concealer that is a shade darker than your foundation over your problem spots. Let the concealer dry completely before going over it with foundation. This will help to eliminate the redness as well as the raised look of a blemish. Also if you are acne prone like myself, try using a full coverage foundation for those blemish days. This will ensure all of your redness is evenly covered up.

3. Luminosity.

Feeling like you want to rock dewy skin? Try mixing in a liquid illuminator to your foundation. My favorites are the Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops and the very close dupe (and much less expensive option) the Makeup Revolution Liquid Highlighter. As a general rule, take one pump of foundation to one drop of liquid illuminator, mix, and apply.

4. Make it matte.

Looking for a more matte look instead? Try mixing in a small amount of translucent powder to any liquid foundation. To achieve this look while keeping the foundation bendable, mix in one pump of foundation with a pea sized amount of powder. Blend together with the end of a makeup brush or toothpick and apply to the face.

5. Beauty sponge versus brush.

Both a beauty sponge and brush have their benefits. If you want to maximize coverage stick with a flat top, densely packed makeup brush and use stippling motions. A brush will absorb less product than a sponge leaving more foundation on the skin. However if you have any texture on the skin, stick to a beauty sponge. Using a brush can cause microexfoliation and further emphasize skin’s texture. By using a damp beauty sponge and gently patting foundation into the skin you will eliminate microexfoliation and reduce the appearance of texture.

6. Natural makeup days.

I am a full coverage queen, so most days full beat glam is my style. But on the rare days I want to have a more natural look, I like my coverage to be light. You can turn your medium to full coverage foundations into light coverage my mixing a pea sized amount of moisturizer with one pump of liquid foundation. This creates a very hydrated, your skin but better look.

7. Dark circles, redness, or dark spots.

Using a color corrector will counteract dark circles, redness, and dark spots. For dark circles, use a light orange color corrector. This will take away the purples and blues and brighten, making your face look awake and youthful. For redness, use a green color corrector, and for dark spots use a a deep red/orange color corrector. Apply these before foundation application and make sure they dry completely before completing the rest of your makeup routine.

Five Days of Foundation: Best Foundations for Different Skin Types

There are many options of foundations for skin types, and now that the beauty industry is finally beginning to create more inclusive shade ranges in different formulas there is a foundation out there for most anyone. What’s the best one for your skin type? Keep on reading below to find out my recommendations.

Oily skin can sometimes be a challenge to find a good foundation for. Oil is what is used in many makeup removers so when a lot of natural oil comes through it can often break up makeup. For a foundation to be oily-skin approved it has to hold up against oil production. Matte formula’s are the best for oily skin. Try to avoid anything that is labeled as dewy, glowy, luminous, etc, as this will break up quickly on oily skin.

The best foundation for oily skin, hands down is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Liquid Foundation. This will stay in place all day, is transfer proof, doesn’t break up, and applies beautifully. Double Wear also just expanded their shade range to 42 inclusive shades.

Another alternative to the higher-end Double Wear is the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation. This foundation performs very similarly to the Double Wear, however the shade range does leave something to be desired.

For dry skin, anything that will add moisture, or keep skin’s natural luminosity in is key. Opposite of what is great for oily skin, my dry skin queens should avoid anything that says matte as this will emphasize dryness and texture. Glowy, hydrating, dewy foundations are the ones to look for.

The best foundation for dry skin includes the Nars Sheer Glow and the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Glow liquid foundation. Both of these foundations are long lasting while maintaining skins natural moisture. They both are a breeze to touch up which is an important component in picking a great foundation too.

Combination skin is best off using a foundation with a happy medium between matte and hydrating. Look for anything marketed as having a “natural finish”. A foundation that is long lasting, but also doesn’t emphasizing texture or dryness is the Jouer Essential High Coverage Foundation. This foundation is so light weight, yet so full coverage and will apply to the skin beautifully. And if high coverage foundation isn’t your thing, you can mix it in with a little moisturizer to make it light-medium coverage while keeping the long lasting wear time of this magic in a bottle.

That rounds out my top foundations for oily, dry, and combination skin types. Do you have a foundation you’ve found that is a your favorite for your skin type? Share below in the comments.

Five Days of Foundation: Undertones

Part of finding your perfect match in foundation comes in understanding your skin’s undertone. Your undertone is the color beneath the surface.

This means your skin tone, and undertone are two different colors and tones. For example, two people can have the same skin tone, but different undertones, and visa versa. Knowing your skin tone and undertone will help you find the best match in a foundation and other base products.

Undertones are classified in three main categories: Warm, cool, and neutral.

Warm undertones are distinguished by having green or olive veins under the skin on your wrist. Gold jewelry will tend to be the most flattering on your skin. People with warm undertones also tend to tan easily, be yellow in tone in the sun, and have very little pink or redness. Specific warm undertones are identified as being yellow, golden or peach.

Cool undertones are distinguished by having blue or purple colored veins under the skin on your wrists. People with cool undertones will find that silver jewelry is the most flattering, and tend to burn in the sun more easily. Your skin will have a general pinky to red hue and you will tend to show redness, especially around the nose and eyes. Specific cool undertones are identified as being pink, red, or blue.

Neutral undertones are distinguished by having the veins under skin on the wrist that are both blue and green. Both gold and silver jewelry are flattering on the skin, and there are no distinguishable yellow or pink tones.

If you are still having trouble determining your undertone, POPSUGAR has a great quiz to help you out.

To use undertones to determine you foundation shade, find something within your skin tone that also has your undertone.

For example, I have fair skin with cool/pink undertones, so when I am looking for a foundation I look for something that is very light in color and has pink undertones. A foundation that works for my skin tone and undertone is the Urban Decay All Nighter liquid foundation in shade 0.5 which is described as fair porcelain with subtle pink undertones.

If a foundation doesn’t have an undertone described on the packaging, try swatching different foundations in your skin tone range next to each other on the back of your hand. By doing this you should be able to distinguish which foundations have more pink/red or more yellow/golden in them.

Sephora Hacks to Save Stacks

photocredit: glamour.com

Sephora, for those of you who live under a rock, is a beauty girl or guys dream. It carries higher-end big-name makeup, skincare, fragrance, hair, and nail products. If you head into Sephora to pick up a couple products it is very easy to walk out with a bill over $100. To get the most makeup for your money I have put together the best Sephora hacks to save you stacks (see what I did there??).

FREE SAMPLES

The first thing you should know before shopping Sephora is that you can get free samples of almost any product in the store. All you have to do is ask an employee to prepare one for you. The sample size they prepare for you should last anywhere from 2-7 days. Sephora also will write the product details on a small bag they place the sample in. This way if you love the product and want to purchase all you have to do is bring the sample bag in and it will take the guess work out of remembering exactly what it was. Anything from skincare to foundation, Sephora’s got your back with samples!
The things I like to sample the most are moisturizers, primers, and foundations. This is because these products are pretty expensive and not everything works on my oily (sometimes temperamental) acne prone skin. I am also able to test foundation shades in different lighting with samples as well.
If you are someone who struggles to find products that work for you, or have sensitive skin, samples at Sephora will save your life. (Okay, not really, but your skin and bank account will thank you).
Also if you shop online but also want free samples, there are still some available to you. Before finishing your purchase there will be an option to select 3 free samples. Take advantage of this! I find these products are fun to try out and are great for travel.

FREE RETURNS

If you happen to purchase a product at Sephora and after using it you realize you don’t like it, not all is lost my friend! Bring in your product with your original receipt and Sephora will refund you in the form of your original payment or store credit (based on your preference), or you can exchange your product for another one.

THE SALE PAGE

The sale page is the place for discounted products and has new items added every month. I recently got my hands on the Marc Jacobs holiday palette and snagged it for $30 off. Right now they have The Becca Light Chaser Highlighter for 50% off and the Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil for 60% off which are two of my personal favorites.
If you have the Sephora app you can find the sales page by clicking “shop” from the top menu, then scrolling down to “SALE“. Once you are on the “SALE” page you can look through all the discounted items site wide, or choose filter in the top right, and browse by brand, color family, price range, or category (skincare, makeup, etc.) .

If you don’t have the Sephora app then you can access the Sale page at sephora.com/sale

SEPHORA FAVORITES SAMPLERS

Often times Sephora will have a Favorites Sampler kit. I have seen them for fragrance, mascaras, and lipsticks. These kits include samples of several different brands of the same products and a voucher inside. The voucher is good to redeem one, full size product of one of the samples that was included in the kit. This is a great value, and makes a great gift.

VALUES AND GIFT SETS

This is where you can find great deals on bundles. Here they have palette collections and brand bundles. If you are looking to buy multiple items from one brand this is the place to begin your search for the best deals because the value will exceed the actual price you pay.

FREE SHIPPING

If you go into Sephora and they don’t have what your looking for in store, they will ship it to you for free! And, if you are a big online shopper be sure to sign up for Sephora FLASH. This is free 2-day shipping for an entire year for a one-time addition of $10 to your purchase.

BEAUTY INSIDER

Beauty Insider is Sephora’s free rewards program where you get a point for every dollar you spend. There are three different tiers to the rewards program. The first is Beauty Insider. Beauty Insider doesn’t require you to spend any money, however the more money you spend the more points you will collect. Sephora puts together different sample sets each month that you can spend the points you’ve collected on. Even better, if you know you have points collected and see a Insider reward you want to spend them on, but don’t want to make another purchase, just walk to the Sephora counter. Ask an associate to pull up your information, chose your reward, and walk away with a free beauty pick-me-up.
The Beauty Insider tier also gets you a free birthday gift, access to the beauty insider community, and free makeup classes.
The second tier is the VIB. A beauty insider would reach VIB by spending $350 in a year. In VIB you get everything that the Beauty Insider gets, but also a free makeover once a year.
The last, and highest rewards tier is Rouge. A beauty insider would reach Rouge by spending $1000 in one year. In addition to earning points, a free birthday gift, access to the insider community and free makeup classes, you also get unlimited makeovers, free flash shipping for the year on all online orders, invitations to exclusive events, and early access and the highest discount for the semi-annual sales.
If you are doing any shopping at Sephora be sure you are taking advantage of rewards you could be gaining off of purchases you would already be making otherwise.

SEMI-ANNUAL SALE

Every April and November Sephora has their Semi-Annual Sale where you can get up to 20% off your entire purchase. The amount you get discounted is dependent on your Insider status. Beauty Insiders get 10% off, VIB members get 15% off, and Rouge members get 20% off. As mentioned before, Rouge members also get first access to the sale, followed by VIB, and lastly Beauty Insiders. Regardless of your insider status, the Semi-Annual sale is an easy way to save money on beauty products, especially those you want to stock up on.

MAKEOVERS

As mentioned above, if you are a VIB or Rouge member, you can get free makeovers. But even if you aren’t a VIB or Rouge member, you can ask for a free 15 minute mini makeover. This could be anything from a smokey eye, to contouring, to eyebrows. If you are wanting to learn new techniques, or try new products, take advantage of this free service.

COUPON CODES

Lastly, I always check online for coupon codes. Often times you can find free things to add to your bag when online shopping with one of these codes, and sometimes discounts as well.

I hope these tips were helpful. Have you used any of these before? What are your favorite money saving hacks? Let me know in the comments.

But First, Skincare.

Find out my top 4 skincare tips for all skin types.

Did you know skin is your body’s largest organ? It is your body’s first line of defense, and needs care just as the rest of your body’s organs do. And skin care things like sunless tanner and makeup will be better accepted by the skin.

As an oily skin girl, my skin care routine is absolutely vital to having a good makeup day. And even though it has taken 13 years, two rounds of Accutane, and countless skin myths and products, I have finally found the routines and products that leave my skin healthy and clear (with the exception of the hormonal breakout). Here are my top 4 basic skin care tips for beautiful skin for all skin types.

1. NEVER go to bed with makeup on your face.

Sleeping with makeup on your face can age you 7 years faster? Scary!!! Always, always, always take the makeup off your face. Your skin needs a chance to breathe. To take my makeup off I begin by soaking two cotton rounds in micellar water and gently pressing one onto each eye. I let them sit on my eyes for 5-10 seconds to begin to dissolve the makeup and then gently in upward motions wipe the makeup away. My current favorite is the Garnier SkinActive Cleansing Water.

Next I take a cleansing balm or oil and gently massage a nickel sized amount around my cheeks, t-zone, and lips to remove the rest of my makeup. I’m currently obsessed with the Dermalogica PreCleanse.

Lastly, I use a makeup removing cleanser to remove any remaining makeup, micellar water and PreCleanse. I begin by wetting my face and then I gently massage the Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser all over. Finally be sure to rinse thoroughly.

2. Cleanse your skin in the AM and PM.

Giving your face a fresh start both morning and night is important to keeping healthy skin. We want to wash away the makeup, dirt, oil, sweat, and what ever other pollutants our skin has come into contact with from the day, but also the skin can produce oil and sweat that we might be unaware of during sleep.

I like to pair the Gentle Skin Cleanser by Cetaphil with my Clarisonic Mia FIT to get a deep, yet gentle cleanse. The Clarisonic is an expensive tool, but this has made the single biggest difference for keeping my acne prone skin clear, so to me, it is worth it. If you have more questions about the Clarisonic, leave a comment below and I would be happy to answer them below.

3. Moisturize, even if you have oily skin.

Many people think by adding a moisturizer when you have oily skin, it will make you even more oily, but this is pure myth. When your skin is producing excess oil, it is because it is dehydrated and trying to balance itself out. I love the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Hydrator and the Neutrogena Hydro-Boost Water Gel for all skin types. Both contain hyaluronic acid which adds and holds moisture to the skin making it feel plump and hydrated. It is important to moisturize the skin every time after cleansing.

4. H2O!!

Drinking water is the easiest thing you can do to help your skin, and is important for keeping your entire body healthy. To determine how much water you should be drinking a day take your weight and multiply it by 0.66. That is the number of ounces of water that is recommended for you to consume in a 24 hour period. If you work out, add another 12 ounces for every 30 minutes of  physical activity you participate in daily.
